The Maras Moray tour begins at 8:30 am (historic center) . It is a half-day excursion to see the Moray agricultural laboratory, visit the Andean city of Maras with its ancient traditions of artisans and lovely people and, finally, see the completely natural salt mines.
The Incas used these circular terraces located west of Cusco as an agricultural "research station."
Chincheros
Located 28 kilometers from Cusco, Chincheros has colonial-style buildings and was an important agricultural center during Tawantinsuyo. One can appreciate the stone walls with trapezoidal niches that provide the setting for the traditional market, where they still practice bartering. Chincheros women can always be recognized for their distinctive clothes and braided hair. The famous church and archeological site here requires the tourist ticket. (We did not visit Chinchero because most people have visited the Sacred Valley tour).
Moray
Moray is one of terraces or agricultural platforms built in depressions or gigantic natural holes, an impressive new unit of 20 kms with the beautiful snowy mountains Chicón and Verónica in the Vilcanota Range as a backdrop that we continue through Moray.
In Moray we will visit "the greenhouse or agricultural laboratory Inca", terraces or agricultural platforms built in natural depressions with amphitheater style. They have a depth of 150 meters and the concentric circular stone rings that overlap widen as they rise. It was an experimental place to study the adaptation of plants to new ecosystems.
Maras / Salineras (Salinas)
Located 7 miles from Moras and at a height of 3, 380 meters above sea level, is the town of Maras. It is famous for its salt mines, composed of approximately 3000 small wells with an average area size of approximately 5 m². These were already exploited by the Incas as a means of economic exchange and values. It is very interesting to see how the salt is recovered from these mines and the lives of those who work in them.
