The cathedral of Cusco is baroque, built on the foundations of the Inca Wirachocha palace.
Construction began in 1550, using many looted stones from the site of the Sacsayhuaman fortress. It is considered one of the most splendid Spanish colonial churches in America.
Within its cathedral walls are some of the best examples of the Cusqueña painting school, including a Marcos Zapata painting from the Last Supper with a local specialty (guinea pig) as the main course.
There are also non-Christian images in the Cathedral of Cusco: figures of pumas and the Inca representation of the earth are carved in the huge main doors.
Qoricancha is a classic example of the fusion of the Inca and Western cultures. It was one of the most important temples in the Tahuantinsuyu.
Sacsayhuaman is one of the most incredible Inca constructions, built with huge carved rocks joined with absolute precision. Its Quechua name means "satisfied hawk", since the bird guarded the capital of the empire. Cusco was designed in the shape of a cougar, so Sacsayhuaman would be his head, and the Qoricancha would correspond to the genitals.
Its construction took more than seven decades and required the work of approximately 20,000 men. Some of its external walls exceed 9 meters high and 350 tons in weight.
It is located 2 km from the city of Cusco and 10 minutes by car.
Qenqo was a sacrificial center in the Inca era. Here we can find the two archeological sites of Qenqo: Qenqo Grande, which is located near the road from Sacsayhuaman to Pisac; and Qenqo Chico, which is 350 meters west of the latter, on the hillside. Both are places of worship whose nature has not yet been deciphered, but in which we can highlight the predilection of the Inca for the stone and its thoroughness with respect to the carving process.
Puca Pucara is a military construction located near Cusco. It is a fortress composed of large walls, terraces and stairways. It had specifically military purposes as part of the defense of the city.
Only 7 kilometers from Cusco is this archaeological complex, also known as the Inca Baths. It is one of the most important Inca constructions due to the extraordinary assembly of the stones that form its walls. It has an amazing underground hydraulic system because the Incas considered water as a life-giving deity.
