Visit the mines of Maras, the town of Chincheros and the terraces of Moray on a half-day tour.
Includes private transportation and guide.
The Maras Moray tour starts at 8:30 a.m. It is a half day excursion to see the Moray agricultural laboratory, visit the Andean city of Maras with its ancient traditions of craftsmen and charming people and, finally, see the salt mines, completely natural.
The Incas used these circular terraces located west of Cusco as an agricultural "research station".
Located 28 kilometers from Cusco, Chincheros has colonial style buildings and was an important agricultural center during the Tawantinsuyo. One can appreciate the stone walls with trapezoidal niches that provide the setting for the traditional market, where they still practice bartering. The women of Chincheros can always be recognized for their distinctive clothes and braided hair. The famous church and archaeological site here requires the tourist ticket. (We did not visit Chinchero because most people have visited the Sacred Valley tour).
Moray is one of terraces or agricultural terraces built in gigantic natural depressions or holes. An impressive new 20-kilometer drive with the beautiful snow-capped mountains Chicón and Verónica in the Vilcanota mountain range as a backdrop that we continue through Moray.
In Moray we will visit "the greenhouse or Inca agricultural laboratory", terraces or agricultural platforms built in natural depressions with amphitheater style. They have a depth of 150 meters and concentric circular stone rings that overlap as they rise. It was an experimental place to study the adaptation of plants to new ecosystems.
Maras / Salineras (Salinas)
Located 7 miles from Moras and at an altitude of 3, 380 masl, is the town of Maras. It is famous for its salt mines, composed of approximately 3,000 small wells with an average area size of approximately 5 m². These were already exploited by the Incas as a means of economic exchange and values. It is very interesting to see how the salt of these mines is recovered and the lives of those who work in them.
